The first osteopathic medical school was started in 1892 by an MD who observed the human body and then developed these additional diagnostic skills and manual treatments. Some of these treatments look similar to what chiropractors perform, the first one having studied under this founding physician, and physical therapists have now incorporated some osteopathic manipulation techniques. The osteopathic physician practices regular Western medicine and also considers the whole person and how structure and function are interrelated. The DO undergoes the same type of, and duration of, training as an MD with the exception of having two hundred additional training hours specifically in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment and assessment.
